Where do all the cacti go?

I am so thankful when people who have received my cacti send me images of them sitting happily in their new homes. It's amazing but I really can recall almost each and every cacti I've made, whether it be the vintage pot and where I found it, or making the knitted plant. Thank you to all those beautiful customers who have shared their happiness of their Odds&endS Cacti with me and many others.

Over Christmas I made a big, big bunch of vintage cacti, many of which have now gone on to find new homes. I managed to snap this picture of the beautiful ceramics all laid out on my work table. I absolutely love the colours and textures, don't you!

A lady with a list of passions close to my own, 1.Cacti 2.Succulents and 3. Macramé, our crafts were destined to come together. Pippa, runs the clever label Ouch Flower, the phrase coined by her son when describing the not so touch friendly cacti in and around her home. She makes the most beautiful Macrame plant hangers and other knotted and embroidered delights.

Pippa asked me to make her an Arizona cacti for a very sweet Arabia Finland ceramic sugar bowl that she thrifted. Can you believe someone gave such a cute little piece of retro treasure away. I think it's worked out to be a happy ending for this little bowl, I hope Pippa and her son enjoy his soft woolen goodness. A xx

House Hunting

We've decided to get our own pad, I've been dreaming of the day when i can wake up one morning and say, "Darling, I think today I will paint the bathroom in Chevrons" It's significantly harder than we thought with a competitive housing market here in Melbourne. Fingers crossed the perfect little house will find it's way to my decorator hands and I can create spaces like these (well, in my dreams along with Chevron bathrooms).

I admire photographers and how they manage to capture a simple moment, and turn it into something precious. Hillary Walker's photography has popped up in several magazines that I have admired, including Frankie's Book SPACES, often I have exclaimed "oh what a nice shot" but not taken note of the person behind the camera. She is a Melbourne girl, which makes me like her even more, and has photographed some awesome people and places (see just a small snippet below). I do hope one day I get to meet her, and for her camera lens finds it's way to my place. x A

There was no disguising the delight of budding artist Jacob Rudman-Reeves (left) when the mosaic Piece By Piece was formally unveiled in Warrnambool. Creative director of the project, Renee Broders, fellow artist Michael Hilder and member for South West Coast Denis Napthine shared his joy.

I am so proud of my big sister Renee, she is such a wonderful person, she is truly one of the most talented people I know. In November she unveiled the most amazing public art project titled, Piece by Piece. The massive mosaic was unveiled in the CBD of Warrnambool. It not only shows Renee's creative talents, but her beautiful ability to inspire and encourage others. As the creative director, Renee's vision was to create a project that empowered people with disabilities, she guided over 100 participants, spending endless hours working together to achieve an amanzing result. I am so proud of her achievement, I think the people of Warrnambool are too......

It's beautiful - I really, really love it. So great that it has those 'local' elements like the FJ water tower and tower hill, etc. Please.... more public art that is produced by our own local artists? Congratulations and well done to all of you who have been involved in this wonderful community arts project.

Who are you Mrs Crafty?

I recently found the most amazing collection of craft books and pamphlets in a small country op shop. The prize find was a beautiful set of 3 sketch book folios. There was no name, no date, no record of who the owner was. I wish I knew who took such time and care in collating these craft projects and documenting what looks to span 20 years of newspaper and magazine clippings. I wonder what she looked like, did she make any of these items, how old was she, where was she from? I imagine she was a lady of style with her obvious love of bags an accessories, check out the adorable jewelery and hat designs that she's documented. She must have been a homemaker, with an interest in furnishings and textiles, and possibly a mother shown by her clippings of how to make children's toys and furniture.

To some people these journals might look like simple scrap books, but to me it's a valuable time capsule of this persons love for craft, I am so thankful that it has made it's way into my hands where I hope to continue it's purpose of inspiring me to keep on making!

Some of the other Craft Books found at the same op shop...I wonder were any of these hers also?

I am tempted to give this one a go!

I managed to get this so no pretty photo of the Fitzroy OBUS store as I whisked past last week. This summer their collection is a fabulous assortment of clothes and accessories inspired by the fun and colour of a Mexican Fiesta! I was invited to created an installation of knitted cacti for their 3 Melbourne Obus stores.

I am pretty chuffed with the result. I think most of my earnings are likely to go towards some of their gorgeous clothes. Here are a few of my favorites outfits.

Alex makes a mean coffee having worked for some of Melbourne's best coffee institutions, Seven Seeds, Saint Ali amongst others.

I don't usually mention foodie things on here, but today we visited a friends cafe in Kensington, The Premises. Alex and his partner Kate have brought together the best of Melbourne's coffee and food. I was so happy to see my old woodworking teacher (Alex's father) had been used to his best advantage creating most of the shops fit out with beautiful recycled timbers and salvaged building materials. Even better it's kiddie friendly with its communal seating and enough open space to not feel like you are sharing your dining partners breakfast! Awesome with a capital 'A'!

State of Design - Design Made Trade Event. Melbourne

I am very excited to say that I will be taking part in this years State of Design Festival as part of the Design Made Trade Event, Craft Victoria has organized a wonderful display where myself and 11 other makers will take their studios on the road, sharing an insight into our work practices and techniques as part of the 4 day trade event. I am very excited to be involved with all the talented makers, for a full list check it out here.

I will be sharing a space with Stephanie and Kyle of Fine Design, you might be familiar with their cute shop and studio Five Boroughs in Brunswick. It looks to be a match made in heaven, I can't wait to get a sneaky peak into their lovely designs and have a good chat about their retro treasures.

It's been a little while in the making, but with some hard work (thank you to my beautiful husband for working his computer genius) it is finally up!I am so happy with the end result. My goodness what a blur this last month has been....I have been snowed under with the cacti craze, it's so exciting how things have been moving along. The website is nearing completion, the window at Craft Vic was a huge success and I have meet some lovely new retailers who will be stocking my Odds&ends soon.

I was so excited to see my knitted cacti in the Real Living magazine May issue.....right on the "Contents" page and also in a beautiful interiors shoot. I have to say a big thank you to the magazine and to Kido for sharing the product with everyone.

I have been promising a new Odds&endS website of many months...and slowly the content has been coming together, It is a much bigger project than I initially thought, but I know by taking our time there will be less to changes to be made in the future. Recently we had a great photo shoot at the beautiful home of my best friend Mel. As an interior stylist, she has the most amazing decorative objects. I love her style and elegance, plus shes the best friend ever! Thanks Mel, you and your home rocks :)

I am sitting down to a nice hot cup of tea....freshly poured from my loved Lotte pot. Relaxing, having just installed my window exhibit at Craft Victoria. I am so pleased with the result. After 3 months of preparation it's so nice to see how it has all come together. I could not have managed it without the helping hands of Milly and Eric from Craft Vic....negotiating the 3m high install was an experience.


Quiet woolen stones also decorate the window.

The show titled Yarnscape can be viewed 24/7 at Craft Victoria, 31 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.

If you happen to fall in love with any of the cacti displayed, yes! they are for sale... The lovely girls in store can help you if your interested. I had such luck sourcing some really beautiful vintage pots, they are in mint condition, with such striking colours....particularly the West German retro orange lava glaze.

DIY - Urchin Pouf

I have been loving these knitted poufs for ages....my mother in law put me on to these awesome DIY instructions.....It looks super easy but potentially very tricky knitting with such jumbo sized needles and multiple lengths of yarn. If your not keen on some heavy duty crafting, check out these ready made versions by Christien Meindertsma or locally at Country Road.

What you will need:
Eskimo, 18 balls (Or yarn suitable for US #13 needles)
Acrylic yarn would probably be a really good alternative, as it´s a piece of furniture
US #19 circular needles

2 cheap duves (feather and down)

How to do it:
Cast on 35 stitches using three threads. Knit the garter stitch until you´ve knitted all the balls, and there is just enough yarn left to assemble the stool. You now have ONE rectangular piece. Cast off loosely.

Assemble the short sides (35 stitch side) as neatly as you can.

Assemble the first long side. This is supposed to be the top or the bottom of the stool. Put the needle through the end stitch of every second row and tighten, tighten, tighten! Repeat on the rows in between and tighten until there is no hole in the middle.

Stuff the duves into the stool. We tried to make a ball of the duves before we stuffed it.

Assemble the other end in the same manner as the first.

How to play Croquet like an English man

Order a Pimms Cup.
Remark superciliously that "Six Wicket Croquet is really an American game."
There are two teams, one player and one ball. Order of play is order of colors on wicket.
Each Player/Team takes turn going through course as follows: You have the choice of advancing your ball, or knocking the crap out of your opponent's. Each round is one shot. However, you are awarded an immediate extra shot for every wicket you pass through.

The game ends when the first Player/Team either
(a) passes twice through all 6 wickets
(b) orders a third Pimms Cup or,
(c) complains about the quality of American theater.
Our staff is available to settle disputes, provide copies of the official rules, and offer additional libations.

It's been an ongoing tradition of mine, along with my close friends Melissa and Kellie to hold a Camberwell market stall at least once a year.

2011 Summer stall....THIS Sunday 13th Feb at the Camberwell Rotary Markets.

We would love to have some friendly visitors, or just have you come and enjoy a morning looking for your own hidden treasures.

We have lots of vintage wares including, textiles, homewares, clothing and more. All ready to find pretty new homes.

Magnolia Square - Friends

Well, I am 2 days into the Magnolia Square markets and I thought rather than share with you how our Odds&ends are going (which I will do...but I will give you the full run down after tomorrows last day) I would quickly mention some of the other lovely stall holders and their inspiring work.

The brainy and friendly folk behind these labels have been great fun to chat with, drool over there lovely products and to share the odd crafty tale.

Chicken Foot Designs - Fabulous Linen Tea Towels and beautiful stationary. Designed by Helena Harry, a delight to have shared the stall across the way at Mag Square.

Mattt - With 2 of my cactus now happily joining his abode, I have a shared admiration for his range of bags and textiles. Practical and beautiful, my favorite would have to be the digital prints of Cuisenaire (wooden counting blocks) an absolute visual treat of colour!

Lucy Feagins is honestly a treasure, she is the talented editor of The Design Files, I have been following her site for a long time (even linked it a few times in this blogs history), her blog is chock to the brim with inspirational reviews, interviews and interiors a daily must read!

I met Lucy this past weekend at the Finders Keepers Markets. I was so happy to see that she featured our knitted cactus in her market wrap up on the Design Files.

Finder's Wrap up

Wow wee, what a whirl wind weekend (Gosh that was a lot of W's wasn't it!). I managed to survive the Finders Keepers Market this weekend that was held in Melbourne for the first time. It really was such a lovely event, I met some wonderful fellow makers and many new lovely customers and some old (thanks for coming to visit me again).

If you managed to come down to the event, I am sure you too were blown away by the array of exciting crafters. There was so much good stuff I had to refrain from spending all my takings, although I did treat myself to a few new pieces.
